Messaging
BandMate includes direct messaging so you can have conversations with your bandmates without leaving the app. You can only message people you share a project with.
Starting a Conversation
The BandMates section at the bottom of the sidebar lists everyone you share a project with, grouped by project.
- A green dot on an avatar means the person is currently online
- A badge on their name shows how many unread messages you have from them
- The section header shows the total unread count across all conversations
Click any bandmate's name to open the chat drawer.
Chat Drawer
The chat drawer slides in from the left, alongside the sidebar. Your main content shifts to the right to make room — nothing is obscured.
Inside the drawer you can:
- Read the full conversation history
- Send a new message by typing and pressing Enter
- Scroll up to load older messages
- See when the other person is typing (three-dot indicator)
- See read receipts — a single check means delivered, double check means read
Close the drawer by clicking elsewhere or pressing Escape.
Missed Message Emails
If you receive a message while you are offline, BandMate will send you an email summary after a short delay. The email lists each conversation with a snippet of the most recent message and a link back to the app.
These emails are only sent when:
- You have unread messages
- You are not currently online in the app
Opting Out
You can turn off missed message emails in your BandMate account settings under Chat notifications.
Who Can You Message?
Chat is only available between users who share at least one project. If you do not share any projects with someone, you will not see them in the BandMates list and cannot open a conversation with them.
